Malmesbury School is a high performing Academy in Wiltshire. Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, the school became the first in Wiltshire to achieve the government-backed Career Mark for the standard of careers advice and support that it provides to its students.
Louise Boyd is the Senior Curriculum Leader for ilearn at Malmesbury School and is instrumental in developing a careers programme that ensures students receive the best advice and guidance. We asked how the school raises the profile of careers education and encourages parents to become involved. Louise said,
‘Making information available to parents raised the profile. Also, linking to business and setting up ‘Careers Week’ as a focus made it ‘real’ for students.’
The school’s careers programme makes use of extra-curricular activities which support students and parents. As head teacher Tim Gilson said,
‘Parents and students told us this was an area that they were concerned about and I am very pleased we have been able to ensure that our students receive the very best advice and guidance.’
Part of Malmesbury School’s careers programme involves using Kudos, the popular online careers guidance tool which they have used with their students for many years. Louise said,
‘It was a good tool for students to use, worked well in lessons and was cost effective!’
Using the impartial careers tool with Years 9, 12 and 13 students, Louise describes how it fits in with their careers programme,
‘All of Year 9 use Kudos prior to making options choices. We also use it in the sixth form-based programme during their tutorial programme. Kudos is also used as a tool by our in-house careers adviser, Leanne Newton, as part of her one-to-one interviews.
The students find it easy to navigate around and the language is accessible. Students get new perspectives on what their strengths and skills could lead to job wise.’
