Raising aspirations starts in primary schools
12 April 2011
With a number of government-led initiatives to improve performance in schools, one company has gone further by launching a new product to introduce children aged 7-11 to a variety of jobs. Paws in Jobland aims to increase children’s aspirations from an early age and encourages them to think about what they want to be when they grow up.
Developed by CASCAiD, a Loughborough University company, the internet-based program is now available to all primary and SEN schools in the UK.
Lynda Lacey, Chief Executive of CASCAiD Ltd said,
“What we’ve tried to do with Paws in Jobland is to provide young children with a lively and engaging introduction to what they might be doing when they grow up. Making the connection between school and what they may be doing in the future is key to achieving success and raising their aspirations”.
As a leading producer of careers guidance products that are used in most secondary schools and colleges, it seemed a natural progression for CASCAiD to expand its product range to include primary schools.
The new program features a friendly dog called Paws who guides children around Jobland, exploring different jobs.
One pupil already using Paws in Jobland said, “I like finding out about all the jobs; it’s good to know what adults do. I really like Paws the dog too. He’s funny and helpful”.
Encouraging children at this earlier stage in their education and introducing the concept of ‘what you can do when you grow up’ will help them to understand and progress in their education. The program is internet-based to enable classroom access and is supported with worksheets and teachers’ notes. Further information can be found at www.cascaid.co.uk/paws.
